TITLE:  Athletic Trainer

REPORTS TO:  Superintendent

JOB GOAL: Provide the operating and management of the athletic training and sports medicine program for Pikeville Independent Schools.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and illnesses occurring to all Pikeville athletes and cheerleaders.
  • The head athletic trainer is required to be certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association and licensed by the State of Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure. They are also required to maintain current first aid and CPR certifications, including AED certification.
  • The head athletic trainer will answer to the school system superintendent, with direction and guidance from the high school principal, athletic director, and assistant athletic director.
  • The head athletic trainer is responsible for the medical care and medical supervision of student-athletes.
  • The head athletic trainer will monitor heat conditions during summer practices and provide required heat index information to the athletic director and to the KHSAA.
  • The head athletic trainer will cover summer practice for all in-season varsity practices when feasible within their work schedule. They will also attempt to provide coverage for all other sports practicing during the summer. The head athletic trainer will be off and the athletic training room closed during the mandatory KHSAA sports dead period.
  • The head athletic trainer will bring any conflicts or problems with sport game/event or practice coverage to the school district superintendent, high school principal, or athletic director, and they will decide what will and will not be covered by the head athletic trainer.
  • The head athletic trainer will organize, equip, order supplies for, manage and maintain an athletic training room on campus at Pikeville High School. They will maintain a budget for supplies and equipment, and they will make purchases following all Board of Education policies and procedures.
  • The head athletic trainer will organize pre-season physicals for all athletes and cheerleaders. The head athletic trainer will keep medical records on all student-athletes that participate at Pikeville High School. These records will include pre-season physical exam forms, parent consent to participate and to treat forms, insurance information, and accident/injury/treatment records. The head athletic trainer will communicate with all head coaches concerning the medical eligibility of their student-athletes.
  • The head athletic trainer will regularly check all athletic facilities for safety hazards and will inform the athletic director and/or administration any time a game or practice facility has a hazard.
  • The head athletic trainer is responsible for implementing measures to prevent the spread of infectious disease in the athletic training room. They will also inform the athletic director and coaching staff any time there is a risk of infectious disease transmission at a practice or game, or in a locker room or other athletic facility. They will document Universal Precaution training for all members of the athletic training/sports medicine staff.
  • The head athletic trainer will make recommendations to the coaching staff and athletic director regarding the purchase and proper fit of protective equipment for the sports teams and student-athletes. The coaching staff is responsible for the purchasing and proper fitting of protective equipment for their sport.
  • The head athletic trainer will provide medical coverage when requested for all visiting teams and officials at our athletic games and events.
  • The head athletic trainer, along with the athletic director, will be responsible for implementing and maintaining an Automatic Defibrillator program for all athletic facilities. This will include purchasing of AED’s, keeping records of staff AED training and AED maintenance, and for documenting testing of the AED’s and any use of the AED’s.
  • The head athletic trainer is not responsible for coverage of any summer camps provided by the coaching staff at Pikeville. They may work independently for the coaches/directors of these camps for additional compensation beyond the athletic training contract, but this coverage is totally separate from the duties of the head athletic trainers’ position with the school system. Also, the head athletic trainer is not required to provide coverage for any open gyms/fields for any teams, and they are not required to attend any summer team camps for the schools’ athletic teams.
  • The head athletic trainer will complete any other duties assigned by the school district superintendent. 
  • The work day for the head athletic trainer will be from 1:00 p.m. daily until completion of any on campus event or practice.  The athletic trainer should be on hand beginning at 1:00 and the training room/area should be open.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • The head athletic trainer is required to be certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association and licensed by the State of Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure.
  • A Masters Degree is Required
  • Required to maintain current first aid and CPR certifications, including AED certification.
  • Satisfactory completion of State mandated health examination.

 

EVALUATION:

  • Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the School District Superintendent.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Salary commensurate with the Pikeville Independent Schools Certified Salary Schedule.
  • Position will pay into KTRS.
